Chapter Twenty-two
TABATHA FLETCHER
Memories that Iâd hoped never again to revisit overwhelmed me, and it all started with seeing Ronald again. I had told myself it would be okay, and Iâd wanted to believe I was over him. But Iâd lied to my damn self. Big mistake, because it seemed as if Iâd awaken a sleeping giant, an addiction so powerful, it almost killed me.
I paced my apartment, trying to out walk the emotions that threatened to suck me into a dark vortex. After several hours of walking back and forth, I realized I was not going to be able to talk myself down from this without help.
I picked up the phone, but before I could finish dialing, the doorbell rang. Company never dropped by unannounced, so I was afraid to go to the door. Iâd seen on the news that thieves were getting so bold, they were coming to homes in broad daylight and kicking in doors.
I was standing frozen next to the phone, unsure about what to do, when the bell rang again, followed by an impatient-sounding knock. Whoever was at the door wasnât going away, so I had no choice but to answer it.
âWho is it?â I shouted into the door opening. If they were going to kick it in, they would have done it by now.
âGirl, itâs LaDena. Open the damn door. Itâs hotter than a witchâs tit out here.â
I couldnât understand why LaDena was outside my door. She never came by, and sheâd picked the absolute worst time to start trying new shit.
âDid you get lost?â I blocked the doorway just in case she had it in her head she was coming inside.
âLost? Why you blocking the door like a damn linebacker?â She pushed me aside and came in the house.
âHello? Why are you at my house instead of your own?â My curiosity stopped me from getting upset with her.
âIâm here because Iâm sick of watching you mope around the office like youâve lost your last friend. And since you act like you donât want to talk in the office no damn moâ, I decided to come by to see if there was anything I could do.â She walked in my kitchen like she owned the damn place and poured herself something to drink. âIs this all the alcohol you got?â She held up the half-empty bottle like there was piss in the bottle instead of aged scotch.
I rolled my eyes. âYou donât have to drink it.â
She hadnât been here two minutes, and sheâd already plucked my nerves.
âHumph. You donât have to tell me. I always carry my own.â She pulled out a silver flask from her purse and poured a generous portion of the contents into a glass with some ice.
âWhy donât you just make yourself at home?â
âI already did. Are you going to let me drink alone?â
I had never noticed this bossy side of LaDena, and I didnât know if I liked it or not. But she did take the focus off of me and the other, more dangerous things going on in my head.
